Do you love social media?
Do you want to model?
Do you love the idea of making money from the content you post up on your social media?
If you answered yes to any (or ALL) of the above, then let me introduce you to social media influencers.
What is social media influencing?
The world of social media influencing is a relatively new one. Social media influencers have a large, loyal, dedicated following. When they post something up, a big group of people see their content. A lot of the time, these social media influencers are able to influence their audience (hence the name) as usually they are someone that their audience looks up to. In a nutshell, marketers use social media influencers to reach out to an audience in a more personal and connected way. Influencers are paid to promote a brand's product on their social media channels. With this power that they hold over their followers, an influencer is a valuable resource to a brand looking to increase their reach or improve their brand associations.

Who are some famous social media influencers?
I have a challenge for you. Have a look through your Instagram feed and do a bit of an investigation into who you are following. I would be willing to bet that you are following at least 2-3 influencers (and you may not even know it!). The signs that someone is probably an influencer is that they (1) have a BIG following (usually over 10,000) and (2) they sometimes post about a product and plug the brand (they may even have a 'special offer' linked to their name). When I did this for myself, I definitely found a couple of social media influencers hiding in my Instagram! Media Kix recently released a list of some great social media influencers that are based in Australia if you're still curious (Check it out HERE).
How can I become a social media influencer?
Before I give you some tips on improving your social media following and developing an influencer profile, I want to give you a bit of a warning: Social media influencing is NOT an easy thing to do. It takes time, effort, and continuous thought. It also takes a thick skin as with a following also comes a fair amount of negativity!
Understand your audience
The first thing you need to work out is WHO is your audience and WHAT content are they looking for? What can YOU offer an audience that they WANT to see? If you're great at baking, perhaps you can put up baking tips. If you spend all day on the beach, then maybe you can show off your beach lifestyle. Think about what you do and what your audience might like to see. Show off YOUR talents and you'll find that the audience will come!
1. Be consistent and unique!
No matter what audience you choose, you MUST keep them in mind every time you post. There's no use having a baking blog that sometimes has posts about going on a bushwalk! Think about your audience and keep it consistent. It's also really important that you are able to produce content that is DIFFERENT to what is already out there. Doing this will ensure that your audience won't lose interest and you'll gain a following of like-minded people!
2. Talk to other influencers
Find some other influencers that have a similar audience to you. Then... Talk to them! If you can work with them and get in on a promotion that they are doing, you are more likely to get in the door for your own work in the future.
3. Listen to feedback
Although reading all of the negative comments from your followers is definitely not a good idea, I would recommend having a look at any suggestions that your audience has. The more you can respond to what the people want, the more likely you are to gain a loyal and supportive audience (which is EXACTLY what you want as a social media influencer).
4. Be smart and develop a profile
It's really important to be smart when you are starting your journey as an influencer. Do your research and spend time on developing your following. You also need to develop a profile for yourself, so it is a good idea to have the majority of your posts involving photos of YOU (this is where the modelling comes in).

At the end of the day, social media influencing can be a really tough road. In saying this, however, the rewards at the end can be massive. Many social media influencers have gone onto start their own businesses, become prominent TV personalities, and even start their own mini empires!
